History

History

Not much is known of Kunming's early history. Kunming was founded in the year 765, it was being known as the Tuodong city in the Kingdom of Nan Zhao to the chinese during the 8th and 9th centuries.



However, this changed when the Mongols swept through China, establishing the Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368). In 1276, It was founded by one of the Mongol rulers and acquired the name, Kunming. It was made as the provincial capital. Thus, the city was grew as a trading center between the southwest and through out China. But it was also known as the 'Duck pond town' for its people barbaric's actions.


In the 14th century, Kunming came under control of Ming dynasty after the defeat of the Mongols. Kunming has upgraded itself greatly for being the superior perfecture of Yunnan during both the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Thus, founding of the city can, therefore be said to have been a perdominantly19th century affairs.
